Helen McMahon
is one of Philadelphia's most active theater lovers, celebrating not only the Lantern's growth but all of the depth and diversity that has sprung up across the city over the past 20 years. She has played many important Lantern roles over the years, including patron, donor, organizer of parties and lectures, and calligrapher of invitations, and the mother of founding artistic director Charles McMahon. But perhaps the world knows her best as the source of the finest cookies and brownies on Earth, which have been famously featured items at the Lantern's concessions stand for more than a decade.
Frank X has been one of the most important artistic forces in Philadelphia theater over the past two decades, specializing in characters of great complexity, passion, and spiritual depth. Frank has appeared in 15 productions at the Lantern – from
Ghosts in 1998 to
The Island in 2012 – and has been a major contributor to the company's artistic growth. He has been honored with five Barrymore Award nominations for his work at the Lantern, and took home the Best Actor in a Play trophy for his performance in InterAct Theatre Company's production of
Lonely Planet in 1996. Fellow actors are eager to work alongside him and directors are very grateful for a collaborator who brings his whole mind and heart to every role.
Lantern Theater Company seeks to be a vibrant, contributing member of our Greater Philadelphia community, exposing audiences to great theater, inviting participation in dialogue and discussion, educating audiences about artistic and social issues, and employing theatrical language and techniques to enrich learning in the classroom.
Each year, we reach a loyal and growing audience of over 18,000 through our award-winning programs: Mainstage Productions that are smart, fun, engaging, and connected to our modern world; Lantern Theater Company: In Conversation, our audience engagement series that offers an insider's look at each production; and Illumination, our innovative education program that engages students and adults in the world of theater, nurturing their artistic expression through in-school residencies, student matinee performances, and teaching artist training for after-school programs throughout the city.
