The Liar
Lantern Theater Company Announces 2nd Extension through Dec. 9 for The Liar by David Ives – Five Performances Added

Wine tasting event with Wine-tertainer Phillip Silverstone added on Friday, Nov. 30 at 6:30 p.m.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
November 20, 2012

Due to overwhelming demand, Lantern Theater Company announces a second extension of the Philadelphia premiere of The Liar by award-winning playwright David Ives. Playing to packed houses since its first performance on Nov. 1, Ives' "translaptation" of Pierre Corneille's comedy classic has drawn raves – and poetry – from some of Philadelphia's most esteemed theater critics, including The Philadelphia Inquirer's Toby Zinman who wrote: "Readers dear, my pen's on fire / To praise the charm of Lantern's Liar. / The cast is nimble, the cast is quick / For sheer amusement, this show's my pick." David Anthony Fox of Philadelphia City Paper called The Liar "an evening of joyful bliss" and "an absolutely delightful evening," and CultureMob.com's Cecil Shang Whaley said, "I have not laughed this hard in a really, really long time."

The Liar will now run through Sunday, Dec. 9, 2012. The following performances have been added:

Wednesday, Dec. 5 at 7:00 p.m.
Thursday, Dec. 6 at 7:00 p.m.
Friday, Dec. 7 at 8:00 p.m.
Saturday, Dec. 8 at 8:00 p.m.
Sunday, Dec. 9 at 2:00 p.m.

Charming, handsome, and an incorrigible liar, Dorante (Aubie Merrylees) has come to Paris seeking pleasure. He falls head over heels for the beautiful Clarice (Sarah Gliko), but mistakes her name for that of her best friend, Lucrece (Emilie Krause). After lying his way into a world of trouble, can Dorante lie his way back out again? Fiendishly clever and a bit naughty, the wordplay and swordplay of The Liar make for an evening that's filled with delights.

Directed by Lantern Associate Artistic Director Kathryn MacMillan, the production also stars Dave Johnson as Dorante's manservant Cliton, Peter Schmitz as Dorante's father Geronte, Emily Rogge as twins Isabelle and Sabine, Jake Blouch as Alcippe, and Matt Tallman as Philiste.

Tickets are $30-$36 and are available online at lanterntheater.org or by calling (215) 829-0395. Discounts are available for students, seniors, and groups of 10 or more. Lantern Theater Company is located at St. Stephen's Theater, 10th & Ludlow Streets in Center City Philadelphia.

About the Playwright
David Ives is perhaps best known for his evenings of one-act comedies called All in the Timing and Time Flies. All in the Timing won the Outer Critics Circle Playwriting Award, ran for two years Off-Broadway and, in the 1995-96 season, was the most performed non-Shakespeare play in the country. His full-length plays include his most recent, Venus in Fur, which enjoyed a successful Broadway run last season, earning Ives a Tony nomination for Best Play; New Jerusalem: The Interrogation of Baruch de Spinoza at Talmud Torah Congregation: Amsterdam, July 27, 1656, which won the prestigious Hull-Warriner Award and enjoyed two successful runs at the Lantern; Is He Dead? (adapted from Mark Twain); Irving Berlin's White Christmas; Polish Joke; and Ancient History. In addition to this "translaptation" of The Liar, Ives has translated Feydeau's classic farce A Flea In Her Ear and Yazmina Reza's drama A Spanish Play, and adapted Molière's The Misanthrope into The School for Lies. He is also the author of three young-adult novels. A graduate of Yale School of Drama and a former Guggenheim Fellow in playwriting, Mr. Ives lives in New York City.

Special Event: Phillip Silverstone Lies About Wine
Friday, November 30, 2012 • 6:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.
Tickets are $5 (FREE for Lantern subscribers)

Wine-tertainer Phillip Silverstone will lead a tasting of five delicious wines inspired by the complex and funny characters in The Liar. Silverstone's wine philosophy is refreshingly simple and unique. As a 30-year veteran of the grape, he has become a conduit to the world of wine for anyone intimidated by the subject. His anecdotes, short stories, outspoken opinions, and practical "unstuffy" tips are aimed at anyone who enjoys a light-hearted approach to an often dull topic. He produces and hosts "Time Out With Phillip Silverstone" every Friday at 10:00 a.m. on WWDB-TALK 860 Philadelphia.

2012/13 Season
Lantern Theater Company will continue its 2012/13 season with The Beauty Queen of Leenane, by Martin McDonagh, directed by Kathryn MacMillan (January 10 - February 3, 2013); William Shakespeare's Henry V, directed by Charles McMahon (March 14 – April 14, 2013); and closing with the Philadelphia premiere of Heroes by Tom Stoppard, adapted from Gérald Sibleyras' Le Vent Des Peupliers, directed by M. Craig Getting (May 16 – June 9, 2013).
