A Child's Christmas in Wales
World Premiere
By Dylan Thomas
Created by Charles McMahon and Sebastienne Mundheim
Directed by Sebastienne Mundheim
December 5, 2013 - January 5, 2014

From the Lantern and Philadelphia performance artist Sebastienne Mundheim comes an original adaptation of one of the best-loved works from great poet Dylan Thomas. Looking back on a boyhood walk through his Welsh village on Christmas Day, Thomas invites us to join him as he relives his childhood: a larger-than-life world of imagination, myth, and wonder. Mundheim's unique work has been described as "three-dimensional storybooks," combining language and puppetry to imbue everyday objects with life and magic. United with Thomas' comic prose and four of Philadelphia's finest actors, Mundheim's stunning visual landscape will transport audiences of all ages.

"The language is enchanting and the poetry shines with an unearthly radiance." –The New York Times on A Child's Christmas in Wales

News & Reviews

"It will surely steal your heart in an instant! Lantern Theater Company's world premiere adaptation captures all the warmth, nostalgia, and childlike wonder of the original, employing live actors, puppets, miniature houses, plastic-bag clouds, and exhilarating snow flurries to transform Thomas's descriptive language and idealized memories into an enchanting theatrical vision." –Debra Miller, Phindie  more

"Words cannot express the euphoria that is watching Dylan Thomas' A Child's Christmas in Wales. Not enough can be said to compliment the design team (Shon Casuer for Lighting and Robert Kaplowitz for Sound), the cast, and co-creators, Charles McMahon and Sebastienne Mundheim, for doing the impossible: for returning theatre to its roots of storytelling, imagination, and making tangible the impossible." –Samantha Clarke, Examiner  more

"A Child's Christmas in Wales is a Christmas show for people like me who hate Christmas shows, but who love stage enchantment without cliché or trite sentimentality. Do yourself a favor and recapture some of the innocent magic of childhood as displayed by this wonderful piece of work." –Gary L. Day, Broad Street Review  more

"A heartwarming holiday evening, Wales has the charm of a trippy Charlie Brown Christmas." –Julius Ferraro, Phindie  more
